  1. 1934- . English composer and conductor. His 
  2. music combines medieval and serial codes of
  3. practice with a heightened Expressionism as
  4. in his opera Taverner 1962-68. After training
  5. alongside the British composers Goehr and
  6. Birtwistle, he studied with the Italian
  7. composer Petrassi and later with the US
  8. composer Sessions. He has composed
  9. music-theatre works for the group the Pierrot
  10. Players, later the Fires of London. He moved
  11. to Orkney in the 1970s where he has done much
  12. to revitalize music, composing for local
  13. groups and on local themes.
